One of the most upsetting things is opening up your pool to find algae. Not only does seeing the nasty green tint to your water mean you can’t swim, but that you have to do some work. Although getting rid of algae is hard work that you don’t want to do on a hot summer’s day, the sooner you get it done, the easier it is. The longer you let algae sit in the water, the more it grows, making it harder and more expensive to get rid of. So, here’s a guide on how to get rid of algae.
Algaecide
If the algae in your pool has only just started to bloom, it’s possible to get rid of it with the help of an algaecide (Aqua Wham-O). Our algaecide is a concentrated liquid chemical that acts as a preventative for algae but will help if there’s already some algae bloom.
If there is a significant amount of algae in your water, you’ll want to start with a stronger chemical: Aqua Eliminator. This chemical attacks the algae head first by breaking its shell so chlorine is able to enter it to kill it.
Chlorine
After you sprinkle in the Aqua Eliminator, immediately shock your water with Aqua Super Shock. The Super Shock will spike your chlorine and attack the algae bloom.
A pool with algae requires a lot of chlorine because it is what ultimately kills the algae in your pool.
Brush
After putting the chemical in your water, brush the floor and walls of your pool. This way, you help release the algae from the surfaces of your pool so it can be treated by the chemicals.
More Chlorine
Even after you think you’ve put in a ton of chlorine, it’s time to put in more! The algae eats up whatever chlorine is in the water, so even only a few hours after you’ve shocked, your pool will be without sanitizer. So, keep shocking your water until it holds a steady reading.
Alongside shocking your water for a few days, make sure you always have pucks in the skimmer. If you have a salt water pool, turn up your generator. Only once you’re able to hold a stabilized chlorine reading, you can stop shocking daily.
Algae is difficult to kill, but with hard work and the right chemicals, it should be out of your water in no time!
